TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will deepen cooperation with Europe to address security and supply chain challenges, Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu (吳志中) said in an interview on Tuesday.
Speaking to Italian journalist Giulia Pompili of Il Foglio, Wu discussed Taiwan-Europe ties, lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, and Taiwan’s economy and drone industry. He said Taiwan’s strong economy and democratic system have helped it expand trade and investment with Europe, the US, Japan, and other like-minded partners.
Wu said Taiwanese companies have made important investments in Germany, France, and Italy. He added that closer cooperation with Taiwan serves the common interests of Taiwan and other countries because of its key role in semiconductors and high tech.
On the Russia-Ukraine war, Wu said Taiwan has learned the importance of drones in modern defense. He said Taiwan is learning from Ukraine’s experience and working to develop its own drone industry.
Wu also addressed concerns that some Taiwan-made parts had reportedly been found in Russian drones. He said Taiwan strictly follows export controls set by the EU and the US and is improving its control systems.
Wu said Taiwan hopes to improve communication and cooperation with Ukraine. He said this would help stop sensitive parts from reaching Russia.
Il Foglio is an Italian newspaper that covers international politics, geopolitics, and economic affairs. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the newspaper is known for commentary and analysis and has influence in Italian political and public debate.
