TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC will “keep working to stay ahead of competitors,” CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) said Thursday, as the company faces intensifying industry rivalry.
Speaking at the company’s shareholders’ meeting, Wei said the semiconductor sector has long been highly competitive, citing Intel’s 18A process, Samsung’s foundry business, and other emerging players. He added that these developments would not alter TSMC’s focus on advancing process technology and improving manufacturing efficiency, according to CTEE and TaiSounds.
Wei also addressed SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s TeraFab project, a semiconductor manufacturing initiative that aims to produce 1 terawatt of AI computing power annually, about 50 times current global AI chip output. The concept targets 2-nanometer-class manufacturing and envisions a vertically integrated model combining chip design, foundry services, and advanced packaging, according to the BBC.
Responding to the idea, Wei said his “only conclusion is to wish Musk success.” He added that Intel remains among TSMC’s top 10 customers and said his focus is on serving customers while safeguarding the company’s technology and information.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Wei said Taiwan’s semiconductor strength stems from decades of ecosystem development that cannot be easily replicated in the short term. He said it was “wishful thinking” for competitors to suggest they could catch up with TSMC within 10 years, according to Anue.
Wei noted that the company cannot fully predict future applications, but said semiconductors will remain the foundation of technological development. He added that future technologies will continue to rely on TSMC’s technology.
Looking toward 2030, Wei said he has “strong confidence” in the company’s growth outlook. He added that as long as TSMC maintains leadership in technology, manufacturing efficiency, and customer trust, it will remain well positioned to capture future opportunities.
