TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Delta Electronics is developing new energy systems for AI data centers as rising demand increases global power consumption and reshapes computing infrastructure.
Chair Cheng Ping (鄭平) said Tuesday that AI demand is driving a new wave of infrastructure investment while transforming how data centers are built and operated. He said the industry is gradually shifting away from large centralized cloud facilities toward enterprise-level local deployments, driven by requirements for confidentiality and operational resilience, according to CTEE.
Meanwhile, global AI infrastructure added about 4 gigawatts of new power demand last year. Roughly 40% of that demand went unmet because of supply constraints.
Cheng attributed the shortfall to the lengthy development cycle of power infrastructure, which can take 30 to 50 years to complete, far slower than the pace at which AI data centers are being built.
As a result, Delta has expanded beyond traditional power equipment to develop integrated solutions spanning power generation, transmission, and management. Cheng described the approach as a full-chain “from grid to chip” strategy.
The company's future systems will combine renewable energy, solid oxide fuel cells, which convert the energy of hydrocarbon fuels into electricity through low-emission electrochemical reactions, and energy storage. Cheng said such architectures are more complex than conventional power systems and are expected to become an important growth area for the company.
He highlighted solid-state transformers as a key enabling technology. Unlike conventional transformers that require multiple stages of voltage conversion, solid-state transformers can directly convert medium-voltage alternating current into high-voltage direct current, achieving efficiency of up to 98.5% and reducing energy loss.
Delta is also developing power systems that reduce intermediate power conversion steps between medium-voltage grids and data centers. It is pairing fuel-cell generation with heat recovery to improve overall energy efficiency, which Cheng said could support greater self-sufficiency in future data center operations.
