TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) proposed the concept of an East Asian “chain of peace and prosperity” during roundtable discussions at the Hoover Institution on Wednesday.
Cheng claimed that emerging US–China cooperation, easing cross-strait tensions, and stabilizing China–Japan relations are shaping the strategic landscape in East Asia, according to a KMT press release. “We must firmly seize this historic window for peace, starting from the First Island Chain, and turn anxiety over war into a driving force for peacebuilding,” she said.
Dialogue and stability should remain the core consensus, she added
On Taiwan’s strategic roadmap for the Asia-Pacific, Cheng outlined three priorities. First, she said Taiwan should build an AI defense strategy, noting that Taiwan’s strengths in advanced technology and semiconductors give it irreplaceable global advantages.
Second, she called for deeper Taiwan–US cooperation. Cheng said the KMT hopes the two countries will strengthen practical partnerships in defense and security, supply chain resilience, and global participation.
Third, she said major powers such as the US and China should abandon outdated zero-sum frameworks and adopt a model in which technology and economic development are intertwined to promote shared prosperity.
When scholars raised questions about regional security and Taiwan’s development, Cheng highlighted Taiwan’s unique strategic value in the Indo-Pacific security architecture. She said Taiwan is not a pawn to be used by others, but an active actor capable of shaping its own future and committed to resolving issues through peaceful means.
She called on the international community to provide greater opportunities for dialogue and mutual trust among regional partners.
