TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung is moving ahead with an NT$1.8 billion (US$56 million) shopping complex in Beitun District that is expected to open in December 2028, the city government said Tuesday.
The project will be built on a city-owned market site at the corner of Chongde Road, Section 3, and Chongde 18th Road. The building will have three basement levels and six floors above ground.
The complex will include shops, restaurants, everyday services, and parking, the city said. It will also use green building features and energy-saving systems.
The site is near Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, the planned Taichung Dome, Hanshin Department Store, and the 14th redevelopment zone. City officials said the project could help turn the area into a new commercial center in north Taichung.
Taichung Economic Development Bureau Director-General Chang Feng-yuan (張峯源) visited the construction site Monday. Chang said the project shows how the city can work with private companies to make better use of public land.
The city said workers have removed the old building foundation, dug the basement area, and installed retaining structures. The main structure is expected to be completed in October 2027, with a use permit expected in June 2028 and operations set to begin in December 2028.
Officials said the project is part of a wider plan to improve city-owned market sites and support local business growth. They said the shopping complex and nearby developments are expected to bring more services, shoppers, and business activity to Beitun.
