TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Legislative Yuan should reach a decision about its new location before the end of its current term in early 2028, officials said Thursday.
The current building in Taipei’s Zhongzheng District started life as a girls’ school during the Japanese colonial era before housing the Legislature in 1960. Despite the addition of several new buildings over the years, lawmakers still say the complex is not suited to their needs, per CNA.
New ideas include rebuilding the Legislative Yuan at its current site on Zhongshan South Road, while Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) reportedly favors the Grand Hotel, according to Legislative Yuan Secretary-General Chou Wan-lai (周萬來). He said he hoped a decision could be reached before the current Legislature ends its term on Feb. 1, 2028.
Six locations proposed by former Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) were still in the running, Chou said. The list included Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the former Air Force Command Headquarters, and the Tucheng Detention Center in New Taipei.
Outside Taipei, the Chengkungling military base in Taichung, the Chung Hsing Cultural and Creative Park in Yilan, and an area near the Changhua High Speed Rail Station were among the possibilities.
Chou said many of the Legislative Yuan’s employees preferred the former Air Force Command Headquarters on Taipei’s Renai Road, Section 3, CNA reported. Part of the complex is now occupied by the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab.
