TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A US House Armed Services Committee defense bill includes up to US$1 billion (NT$31.39 billion) for the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative to strengthen Taipei's defense.
The committee on Tuesday released portions of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, which authorizes funding for Taiwan, per CNA. The committee is scheduled to review the bill on June 4.
According to materials from the committee’s Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee, the funding is included under provisions established in the FY2025 NDAA. The initiative is intended to help Taiwan maintain sufficient defense capabilities.
The FY2025 NDAA authorized the US Department of Defense to allocate up to NT$9.42 billion (US$300 million) for the initiative, CNA reported. The FY2026 NDAA included NT$31.4 billion (US$1 billion) in funding for the program.
