TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has been preparing power supplies for the AI sector for years, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Tuesday in response to remarks by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳).
After arriving in Taiwan last Saturday, Huang said the country needed more energy, as “no energy meant no economic growth.” Construction was expected to start Wednesday on Nvidia’s Taiwan headquarters at the Beitou-Shilin Technology Park in Taipei.
The ministry said that by the end of 2026, four large gas-fired power plants will gradually go online and provide 5.2 GW of electricity, per CNA. In addition, construction of at least five private and public power stations will be completed from 2027 to 2031.
As Taiwan already maintains a large semiconductor sector, it was prepared for growing energy demand, the ministry said. The energy needs of the AI industry had been taken into account at the planning stage.
Some politicians and media were wrong to interpret Huang’s comments as criticism of the government’s energy policies, the ministry said. Taiwan was ready for the needs of the AI sector.
