TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Museum of Taiwan Literature said Tuesday that registration is open until June 21 for a Taiwan literature translation workshop, which will offer 20 spots and run from Nov. 9 to 14.
The workshop is open to translators, working professionals, and university or graduate students in Taiwan and abroad, CNA reported. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and interested in translating Taiwan literature into English.
Applicants must translate a text provided by the organizers. They must also submit a sample of their English translation work.
Taiwan literature gained global attention after Taiwanese writer Yang Shuang-zi (楊双子) and Taiwanese American translator Lin King (金翎) won the International Booker Prize for “Taiwan Travelogue,” the museum said. It said translation is more than changing words from one language to another, as it also interprets and recreates culture.
The museum said it has made Taiwan literature translation a long-term area of support. It said more young and skilled translators are needed to help bring Taiwan literature to global readers.
The museum first held the workshop in Taiwan last year with the British Centre for Literary Translation. More than 100 translators from around the world applied.
This year’s six-day program will focus on translation practice and career development. Courses will include sample translation exercises, translation discussions, writer talks, book rights, international publishing, and talks by translators.
The workshop will also include cultural activities in Tainan and nearby areas. The museum said the activities will help participants better understand Taiwan’s history, culture, and local landscapes.
