TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Service at Taiwan’s airports should improve as the government doubles the airport service fee, lawmakers said Tuesday.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications plans to raise the fee from NT$500 (US$16) to NT$750 on Sept. 1 and raise it again to NT$1,000 on Sept. 1, 2028. The increase will be the first in 10 years, per CNA.
DPP Legislator Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) told a news conference Tuesday that many travelers said the increase was too steep. However, compared with airport service fees in other Asian countries, the new amount was reasonable, he said.
Taiwan’s rate was closest to the NT$786 levied by Malaysia, while other airports were more expensive, according to Chuang. The fee at Tokyo Narita Airport was NT$1,229 and at Kansai International Airport NT$1,336, while Hong Kong charged NT$1,450 and Singapore NT$1,632, he said.
Chuang demanded the airport and the ministry raise service quality standards after the increase.
