TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Legislative Yuan’s Internal Administration Committee will visit Dongsha Island on July 9 to inspect Coast Guard Administration (CGA) personnel and review conservation results.
Internal Administration Committee convener and KMT Legislator Liao Hsien-hsiang (廖先翔) will lead the delegation, CNA reported. The group will depart from Kaohsiung International Airport in the morning and arrive at Dongsha Airport around 11:30 a.m.
The lawmakers will visit the island’s water treatment plant and postal service office, tour Dongsha Pier, and visit the Dongsha King Temple. They will also stop at the island’s marine research center to learn about conservation management efforts.
The delegation is scheduled to return to Kaohsiung at 2 p.m.
The announcement comes three days after a CGA patrol vessel engaged in a standoff for more than 20 hours with a Chinese coast guard ship that entered restricted waters near Dongsha Island.
This will be the first legislative delegation to visit Dongsha Island since 2018, when then-Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee convener and DPP Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) led a delegation to inspect the island’s defenses and engage with troops.
In 2020, then-Internal Administration Committee convener and KMT Legislator Chen Yu-jen (陳玉珍) planned a visit to Dongsha Island in August, but it was canceled after the Air Force Command deemed it too risky at the time.
