TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) will start a two-week trip to the US on June 1 focused on promoting what the party calls cross-strait peace normalization.
She will travel to West Coast cities before heading to New York, Washington, and Boston for meetings with US political figures and think tanks, per CNA. She will then return to the West Coast for engagements with overseas Taiwanese communities.
Cheng will be accompanied on the trip by KMT International Affairs Department Chief Tung Chia-yu (董佳瑜) and Wennie Wu (吳亮儀), head of the party's Overseas Department. The itinerary is being coordinated by KMT representative to the US, Victor Chin (秦日新), along with Tung's department.
A source told CNA that the visit will center on “normalizing peace across the Taiwan Strait” and seeking a “sustainable solution for cross-strait peace.”
In response to Cheng's trip, Foreign Minister Lin Chia‑lung (林佳龍) said Monday that diplomacy transcends party lines and must represent national interests, per UDN. He noted that Taiwan’s relationship with the US is institutionalized under frameworks such as the Taiwan Relations Act, and said Taipei will continue to strengthen ties with Washington.
Lin said that “normalizing peace across the Taiwan Strait” should be understood in the context of China’s efforts to undermine peace, alter the status quo, and create a “new normal” through coercion. He called for unity in Taiwan’s external messaging and warned against falling for what he described as the CCP’s united front tactics and intimidation campaigns.
