TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) expressed condolences to the families of 82 miners killed in a coal mine explosion in Shanxi, China, per CNA.
Lai said he was deeply saddened by the incident and extended his sincere sympathies to the victims’ families and those injured in the disaster. He added that Taiwan is willing to provide humanitarian assistance if necessary and expressed hope for the speedy rescue of those still trapped or missing.
According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, a gas explosion occurred on Friday at the Liushenyu coal mine in Changzhi City, Shanxi Province. The accident reportedly left 82 people dead, 128 injured, and two missing as rescue operations continued.
Lai posted a message in simplified Chinese on X, expressing deep sorrow over the mining disaster, which caused heavy casualties. He offered condolences to the victims and sympathy to the injured and their families.
Lai said that in the face of a major disaster, Taiwan is prepared to provide humanitarian assistance when necessary. He also expressed hope that those trapped could be rescued as soon as possible and prayed for the victims to rest in peace.
