TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A five-member multiparty delegation of lawmakers from Germany is starting a visit to Taiwan, reports said Saturday.
During their May 23-31 stay, they will meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), CNA reported. While hailing from four different groups right across the political spectrum, all legislators are members of a Berlin-Taipei friendship association.
The delegation leader was Till Steffen, a Green lawmaker who visited Taiwan before, notably in 2016 when he served as justice minister in the state of Hamburg. Delegation members included Markus Reichel and Klaus-Peter Willsch of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU-CSU, Mandy Eissing of Die Linke, and Rainer Kraft of the AfD.
The group was planning to visit a science park in central Taiwan and learn more about the country’s semiconductor sector. They were also scheduled to meet former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), legislators, government officials, and representatives of civil society, per CNA.
The visit came as global attention was focusing on whether US President Donald Trump would conduct a phone conversation with Lai following his visit to China and amid uncertainty over statements about US arms supplies to Taiwan.
