TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – State-run energy group CPC Corp., Taiwan is planning to build a Taiwan Tower in Houston, reports said Saturday.
The site will function as a point of service and assistance for Taiwanese businesses hoping to invest in Texas and for US corporations investing in Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry was in charge of coordinating plans for the project, per CNA.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) first mentioned the idea during a visit to Houston in May last year. The tower will be built on a plot already owned by a CPC subsidiary close to Houston City Hall, per UDN. The subsidiary managed an oilfield in Indonesia and land in Houston that had not been developed for 10 years.
When Lin visited Texas, he saw an opportunity to promote Taiwan-US trade relations and to help the numerous Taiwanese technology firms looking to invest in Houston. Taiwan Tower could house the headquarters of important supply chain companies and help them interact with US firms and local government, the UDN report said.
Asked about its own role, CPC said that as the ministry was managing plans for the project, only ministry officials were qualified to comment on whether the energy group would just be the landlord at the tower.
