TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s representative to Slovakia Li Nan-yang (李南陽) on Friday said preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a shared strategic interest of Taiwan and the US.
In an interview published by Slovak newspaper Dennik N, Li said Taiwan remains committed to preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait while protecting its democratic system and way of life, per CNA.
According to the Taipei Representative Office in Slovakia, Li said current cross-strait tensions were not caused by Taiwan. He reiterated President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) position of maintaining the status quo.
Li said Taiwan’s arms purchases from the US are based on the principle that “peace comes through strength,” aimed at strengthening deterrence and asymmetric defense capabilities to reduce the risk of conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.
He also pointed to rising Chinese military aircraft incursions, cyberattacks, and cognitive warfare as evidence of expanding hybrid threats against Taiwan. Li said Taiwan is strengthening civil defense and critical infrastructure while drawing lessons from the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Li said Taiwan’s importance extends beyond security, describing the country as a key hub for advanced semiconductors and AI development. He added that Taiwan plans to deepen cooperation with Central and Eastern European countries in smart manufacturing, green energy, and drones..
