TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) highlighted the stability of Taiwan–US ties, adding the two sides should expand military and economic cooperation because of intensifying geopolitical challenges, CNA reported.
On Thursday, Hsiao met with a delegation from the US think tank the Center for a New American Security. The group was led by Ely Ratner, former assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs in former US President Joe Biden’s administration.
Hsiao thanked the think tank for its efforts to promote Taiwan–US exchanges and deepen bilateral relations. She emphasized the security partnership between the two sides contributes to regional peace, strengthens economic development, and supports Taiwan’s participation in international affairs.
Hsiao also thanked the US for supporting Taiwan’s participation in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework. The platform brings together members, including Japan, Australia, Canada, and the UK, to share experiences in areas such as health, cybersecurity, communications technology, crime prevention, energy security, and environmental protection.
Taiwan has launched several defense reforms, including expanding the military’s use of unmanned systems and AI technologies, extending mandatory military service to one year, and strengthening reserve force training. Arms procurement has focused on enhancing asymmetric warfare capabilities, including precision-strike drones, missiles, and battlefield awareness systems.
Hsiao added that Taiwan’s drone exports reached about NT$3.5 billion (US$110 million) in the first quarter of this year, surpassing last year’s total of NT$2.8 billion. The Ministry of Economic Affairs forecast that full-year exports could exceed NT$7.5 billion, with major destinations including the Czech Republic, Poland, and the US.
Taiwan’s drone sector has committed to developing a China-free supply chain to meet rising demand driven by cybersecurity concerns. Hsiao said Taiwan has the potential to become a reliable supplier of drones and components for democratic partners.
