TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The ruling DPP on Friday urged the KMT to condemn China’s threats against Taiwan instead of acting as a mouthpiece for Beijing.
The DPP said it was regrettable that KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) criticized President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) second-anniversary speech and used rhetoric that closely mirrored CCP talking points, per CNA.
DPP Spokesperson Lee Kuen-cheng (李坤城) said Lai’s remarks reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to democracy, regional stability, and national resilience. He added that China quickly responded through Xinhua News with accusations of Taiwan “inciting attempts to pursue independence by military means” and “seeking Taiwan independence through reliance on external forces."
Lee said Cheng did not speak from the perspective of Taiwan’s interest, instead using terms such as “Taiwan independence provoking cross-strait confrontation” and “seeking independence by relying on the US.” He said the language was closely aligned with CCP narratives and was used to attack Taiwan’s head of state.
“Taiwanese see very clearly who is standing with the CCP and who the KMT is acting as a mouthpiece for,” said Lee.
Lee said China continues military pressure and restricts Taiwan’s international space, making it the true destabilizer of the Taiwan Strait. He said the KMT mischaracterizes Taiwan’s defense buildup and international cooperation as “provocations,” echoing Beijing’s framing.
Lee said Taiwanese want security, dignity, and peace, not coordination between the KMT and the CCP that weakens Taiwan’s will to defend itself.
