TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and Somaliland are embodiments of democracy in their regions and share the values of freedom and the rule of law, Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu (吳志中) said Monday.
Speaking at a reception in Taipei on Monday to mark Somaliland’s 35th national day, Wu congratulated Somaliland on behalf of Taiwan’s government and people. He also thanked Somaliland for its firm support for Taiwan-Somaliland ties.
CNA reported that Taiwan and Somaliland set up representative offices in 2020. Since then, they have deepened cooperation in health care, talent training, information and communications technology, trade, energy, humanitarian aid, and coast guard affairs.
Wu said these projects have improved people’s welfare and strengthened bilateral ties. He cited Taiwan’s donation of 288 tonnes of rice to people in need in Somaliland last year.
Wu also mentioned Taiwan Road in Hargeisa, Somaliland’s capital. The road project was built through cooperation between the two sides and opened to traffic in July last year.
Somaliland Representative to Taiwan Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal said Somaliland restored its sovereignty on May 18, 1991. He said the decision was historic and brave, per CTS News.
Galaal said Somaliland has become an important democratic model in the Horn of Africa after 35 years of development. He said Taiwan and Somaliland have built a constructive partnership based on mutual respect and shared values.
