TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi (陳明祺) told Canada’s Federal Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs Michael Chong that Taiwan and Canada are natural economic partners, CNA reported Tuesday.
Chen hosted a lunch Monday for the opposition Conservative Party of Canada lawmaker. They exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific, foreign interference, and economic cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Chong said support for developing exchanges with Taiwan is strong and longstanding among both government and opposition parties in Canada. He is visiting Taiwan from May 18 to 21, CNA reported.
The opposition politician said the two countries should deepen cooperation in energy, security, trade, and supply chains. He also praised the Canadian government for publicly supporting lawmakers visiting Taiwan.
At the ministry lunch, Chen said the economic structures of the two countries are highly complementary, making them natural partners. Taiwan and Canada also both value Indo-Pacific security, democracy, and the rule of law, the deputy minister said.
