TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Nantou County on Sunday at 8:46 a.m.
The quake’s epicenter was 33.5 kilometers east-northeast of Nantou County Hall, according to the Central Weather Administration. It had a focal depth of 15.5 km.
Within Nantou County, the quake registered an intensity level of 4 in Guoxing Township; an intensity level of 3 in Hehuanshan, Aowanda, and Puli; and an intensity level of 2 in Sun Moon Lake, Nantou City, Xinyi Township, and Yushan. Yuchi and Zhushan experienced an intensity level of 1.
Taiwan uses a scale of 1 to 7 to measure an earthquake’s intensity at a specific location. Outside of Nantou, an intensity level of 3 was registered in Taichung, Hualien County, and Miaoli County.
An intensity level of 2 was registered in Changhua County, Yunlin County, Yilan County, Hsinchu County, Chiayi County, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, New Taipei, while Chiayi, Tainan, Taipei, and Penghu County felt an intensity of 1.
