TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Traffic was heavy on the first weekend afternoon since the opening of the Danjiang Bridge in New Taipei, while pedestrians complained about the unclear separation from cyclists, reports said Saturday.
The bridge between Tamsui and Bali opened for traffic on May 12. On the first day, a motorcycle hit the rear of a car, raising concerns about safety.
On Saturday afternoon, police reported traffic jams in the direction of Tamsui, per CNA. The sunny weather was encouraging travelers to use the new bridge on their way to townships on the north coast including Tamsui and Sanzhi. Motorists said they did not mind the slow traffic as they were able to better enjoy the scenery.
Pedestrians bracing Saturday’s strong winds to walk across the bridge had concerns about bicycles. While there were markings on the bridge surface to tell pedestrians and cyclists on which side to stay, there was no physical barrier between the two.
Police said they were posting five officers near major intersections to regulate traffic during peak hours on weekends. They also pointed out that trucks of 15 tonnes or more are barred from using the bridge between noon and 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays, CNA reported.
