TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A survey found support for same-sex marriage has risen to 54.3% ahead of the seventh anniversary of its legalization, CNA reported Friday.
The Taiwan Equality Campaign poll marks an increase in support of 12 percentage points from 2019, per CNA. The nonprofit published the survey results ahead of the May 24 anniversary.
Trend Polls conducted the poll by phone in April, receiving 1,077 valid responses with a margin of error of 2.98%. The survey also found increased support for other issues related to LGBTQ rights.
Joint child adoption by same-sex couples won the approval of 67.2% of respondents, up 10 percentage points from seven years ago, while transnational same-sex marriage received a 63% positive rating. The strongest increase in support was for gender equality education, up 21 percentage points from 2019 to 75%.
Approval of assisted reproduction for female same-sex couples remained stable at 59.7%. Though the practice remains limited to infertile heterosexual couples, the poll results showed that the Legislative Yuan needs to discuss the issue, the Taiwan Equality Campaign said.
The survey also found growing acceptance of LGBTQ people as elected politicians and government officials. There was also strong support for inclusive workplaces, especially from young women, the poll found.
