TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport will reduce plastic use and emphasize recycling under a memorandum of understanding signed with the Ministry of Environment on Friday.
Taoyuan International Airport Corporation recorded 47.8 million travelers passing through the airport last year. Each year, the airport collects 13,000 tonnes of trash, including 2,000 tonnes that can be recycled, per CNA.
The airport had already begun cutting back on plastics, such as single-use utensils at restaurants. Staff were encouraged to bring their own bottles and chopsticks, while recycling of plastic milk and detergent bottles was stepped up.
The Ministry of Environment said the main aim of the new memorandum was to boost recycling. The ministry’s Resource Circulation Administration will provide the airport company with guidance and advice on recycling.
The airport is the nation’s main gateway, but its efforts to cut plastic waste will later be replicated by other major transportation hubs, the ministry said.
