TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s national housing agency launched its biggest public urban renewal investment drive Thursday, seeking private partners for nine projects in Taipei, New Taipei, and Kaohsiung that are expected to draw more than NT$59.6 billion (about US$1.89 billion).
The package covers about 6.5 hectares and includes nearly 700 private landowners, with most sites in Greater Taipei and one two-site project in Kaohsiung’s Xinxing District, per CNA.
The National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center said the bulk of the government’s share from the redevelopments will be used to provide social housing for married couples and families raising children.
Six of the projects are in Taipei: Zhongzheng Yongchang, Xinyi Lihe, Xinyi Yaxiang, Shilin Sanyu, Nangang Taipower Houshanpi, and Daan Longquan, according to the report. New Taipei has two projects, Xindian Ande and Zhonghe Xianghe, while Kaohsiung’s project covers the Youth Branch and Army Service Club sites.
Deputy Interior Minister Tung Chien-hung (董建宏) said urban renewal must help Taiwan respond to an aging population, changing city conditions, and younger residents’ need for a foothold in urban areas, per the report. He said the government plans to amend laws on urban renewal and unsafe old buildings, while adding the center’s professional agent system to the Urban Renewal Act.
Center Chair Hua Ching-chun (花敬群) said the latest package moves beyond single-site rebuilding toward wider neighborhood planning. The center has launched 18 investment solicitations since 2018, with another 29 public renewal projects now being integrated or planned.
