TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Following talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Taiwan and China “are not subordinate to each other.”
China's state-run Xinhua reported that Xi told Trump that the mishandling of the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflict” and put China-US relations in jeopardy. The ministry told CNA that Beijing has no right to make any claims on behalf of Taiwan and that it has no authority to represent Taiwan internationally.
The ministry added that the PLA’s gray-zone military harassment and threats in the First Island Chain and around the Taiwan Strait show that Beijing is the sole source of risk to regional peace and stability. It said Taiwan will continue cooperating with the US and all countries that value freedom and democracy to ensure regional security, stability, and prosperity.
During a visit to the Temple of Heaven on Thursday, Trump did not respond to questions about whether he had discussed Taiwan with Xi, according to CBS News.
