TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwanese woman surnamed Chen (陳) has been arrested in the Philippines over alleged illegal work and is waiting to be deported, CNA reported Thursday.
Philippine immigration officers arrested Chen during an operation at a casino in Pasay City, Metro Manila, on May 5. They also arrested two Chinese men, one Malaysian man, and one South Korean man, Philippine News Agency reported.
The Philippines' immigration bureau said Wednesday the five people are suspected of working or carrying out other activities not allowed under their visas. Some of them had also overstayed their visas.
They were taken to an immigration detention center while officials review their cases and prepare deportation proceedings. Taiwan’s representative office in the Philippines has sent staff to visit Chen and is following the deportation process.
A police liaison officer at the representative office said Taiwan has asked Philippine immigration officials to handle Chen’s case in line with the law. The office also reminded Taiwanese not to work in the Philippines while using tourist visas or visa-free entry.
The office said Taiwanese who break Philippine immigration rules may be arrested and deported. It urged travelers not to take such risks.
