TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s future cannot be decided unilaterally by China, DPP Legislative Caucus Secretary-General Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) said at a press conference on Thursday.
Chuang said that Taiwan is a long-term and trustworthy partner of the US, per CNA. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait concern US and global interests, he said.
His comments come as Trump is in Beijing for a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The secretary-general said Taiwan would continue to monitor developments closely. He also argued that excessively promoting narratives that doubt the US’ security commitments is of no benefit to Taiwan.
Chuang questioned why KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) would make statements on behalf of Xi. She reportedly said that if Trump expressed opposition to Taiwan independence, it would fully align with the KMT’s position. These types of remarks could send the wrong message domestically and internationally, he added.
Caucus Secretary-General Fan Yun (范雲) said that both the US State Department and the White House have repeatedly reaffirmed their support for security in the Taiwan Strait ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting. She said Taiwan and the US cooperate closely in security, technology, and the economy. She stressed that this is a long-term, institutional relationship that will not change because of a single meeting or any individual’s remarks.
