TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Wednesday that Taiwan will use its economic and technological strengths to deepen ties with the US and other like-minded partners.
CNA reported that Lin received National Bureau of Asian Research President Michael Wills and other US experts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. Lin and the delegation exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific region, economic security, and technology cooperation.
Lin said national security and economic security are now closely linked. He said this is especially true as AI, data, computing power, and other new technologies become more important.
“These technologies are pushing countries and companies to rethink supply chains,” he said. “Trusted supply chains that are less dependent on China are becoming more important for democratic countries.”
Lin said Taiwan has a key role because of its strengths in semiconductors, AI servers, information technology, and system integration. He said these strengths make Taiwan an important partner for like-minded countries.
Lin said AI and drone technology have also changed modern warfare. He said major powers are competing over AI, making technology a key part of national strategy.
“Taiwan’s location in the First Island Chain and its role in global technology make peace in the Taiwan Strait important to many countries,” Lin said. He said stability in the strait is a shared interest for the international community.
Lin said new technology is also changing foreign policy. “Taiwan is promoting economic diplomacy through industry cooperation, government support, and private sector partnerships,” he said.
“Taiwan has deepened economic security cooperation with the US through trade, investment, and dialogue,” Lin said. He said this has also created a base for Taiwan and the US to work together in other countries.
Lin said Taiwan will expand cooperation with central and eastern Europe, Japan, and other like-minded partners. He said it will use its technology, talent, and capital to support global investment and stronger supply chains.
“Economic strength can help Taiwan expand its international presence,” Lin said.
