TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC held its annual Taiwan Technology Symposium on Thursday at the Sheraton Hsinchu Hotel, highlighting growing demand for AI applications and semiconductor technologies.
Ray Wan (萬睿洋), director of Asia-Pacific Business at TSMC, said AI has increasingly expanded into edge computing, with smartphones gradually evolving into personal AI assistants. Wan said regional customers accounted for production equivalent to 2.1 million 12-inch wafers, which, if stacked vertically, would exceed the height of three Taipei 101 skyscrapers, per CNA.
He said AI continues to expand across industries, injecting new momentum into computing technology and human development. Wan said that larger AI models are now being deployed on cloud computing systems and data center servers, enabling more complex and faster simulation and computational tasks.
The rapid growth of generative AI applications and agent-based AI workflows is driving exponential increases in computing power demand.
According to Wan, agent-based AI systems can accelerate drug development, scientific discovery, and manufacturing efficiency. Supporting these applications requires expanding AI infrastructure supply chains, including high-bandwidth data transmission, efficient power supplies, and advanced heat dissipation technologies.
He added that AI is becoming more common in edge computing applications, including home appliances, computers, and automobiles, all of which require faster environmental awareness and responsiveness. In such scenarios, low latency, low power consumption, and high reliability are critical, per CNA.
Wan said TSMC provides industry-leading chip manufacturing technologies and advanced packaging solutions needed for AI applications. He said TSMC wafers have enabled customers to mass-produce approximately 2,600 products, including smartphone chips, power management chips, solid-state drives, consumer electronics, networking products, displays, and automotive electronics.
He said TSMC’s Asia-Pacific customers launched around 400 new products last year, adding that the company looks forward to continued collaboration and growth in AI-related industries.
