TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s technology companies are emerging as key players in advanced data center cooling systems as rising AI computing fuels growth, CNA reported Wednesday.
A report by the Intellectual Property Office said patents related to data center cooling and thermal management grew at a compound annual rate of 17% between 2015 and 2024. The report identified 8,449 global patent families tied to cooling technologies driven by generative AI and high-performance computing.
Inventec, Foxconn, and Quanta Computer ranked among the world’s top 20 patent applicants in the sector. Together, Taiwanese companies accounted for 15% of the global top 20, ahead of Japan’s 10% and Europe’s 5%, while US and Chinese firms held 40% and 30%.
The Intellectual Property Office said each company has its own strengths. Inventec, for example, stands out in liquid cooling. Of its 111 global patents, 87 relate to liquid cooling, including 19 tied to immersion cooling systems, the highest among Taiwanese firms, per UDN.
Foxconn has pursued a broader thermal management strategy covering immersion cooling, air conditioning systems, and hot and cold aisle management technologies for data centers. The company has focused on developing integrated cooling solutions for power-intensive AI infrastructure.
Quanta Computer has remained focused on air-cooling technologies, holding around 50 related patents. The report said Quanta is one of the few major global companies with more air-cooling patents than liquid-cooling patents, reflecting its established position in traditional server markets.
