TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A motorcycle and a car crashed on the newly opened Danjiang Bridge on Tuesday night, the first reported traffic accident since it began carrying vehicles.
SET News reported that a 42-year-old man surnamed Kao (高) was riding a motorcycle when he struck the rear of a car driven by a 25-year-old man surnamed Chang (張). Kao suffered bruises but was not seriously injured, and both drivers tested negative for alcohol.
New Taipei City Police Department’s Luzhou Precinct said the collision did not disrupt traffic for long. It added that an initial investigation indicated Kao was not paying attention to the car in front of him when he ran into it.
SET News said the motorcycle-car collision raised fresh questions about traffic safety on the bridge. The bridge has separate lanes for buses, cars, scooters and motorcycles, and pedestrians.
Danjiang Bridge is a 920-meter cable-stayed crossing over the Tamsui River in New Taipei designed by the late Zaha Hadid and built to ease traffic between Tamsui and Bali.
