TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Orsted said Tuesday its Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms have generated more than 7 billion kWh of electricity since entering commercial operation.
The 900 MW wind farms, located 35 to 60 kilometers off the coast of Changhua County, were completed and connected to the grid in April 2024, per CNA. Orsted said the projects have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 3.31 million tonnes.
The company said the wind farms are currently Taiwan’s largest commercially operating farshore offshore wind projects. Over the past two years, the facilities have continued operating through multiple typhoons and more than 10 earthquakes measuring magnitude 5 or above, it said.
Orsted said the projects’ capacity factor exceeded the global offshore wind industry average of 42%. The company attributed the performance to predictive maintenance systems, data analysis, and optimization.
Orsted Taiwan Chair Wang Hsin-chieh (汪欣潔) said the projects rely on nearly 100 local operations and maintenance personnel and cooperation with more than 20 Taiwanese suppliers. The wind farms have recorded more than 850,000 cumulative work hours without lost-time injuries, the company said.
The company’s Taiwan operations team is based at its offshore wind operations and maintenance center at Port of Taichung, which supports offshore wind projects in the Asia-Pacific. Orsted is also the largest shareholder in Taiwan’s Formosa 1 offshore wind farm, holding a 35% stake.
