TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Taiwan is closely following developments ahead of the Trump-Xi summit scheduled for Wednesday and remains in continuous communication with the US.
During a Legislative Yuan Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee meeting on Monday, Lin said he remains confident in Taiwan-US relations, CNA reported. He said the US government has repeatedly emphasized that its Taiwan policy will not change.
DPP Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) asked Lin whether his confidence regarding the summit stemmed from intelligence sources, personal belief, strategic judgment, or prior communication with the US about the general direction of the talks. Lin said his confidence is based on comprehensive assessments from various sources.
He added that Taiwan hopes there will be no unexpected developments regarding Taiwan during the summit.
Lin said diplomacy ultimately involves negotiation, and what China wants to gain or give up will only be revealed at the negotiating table. He said US priorities are clear, including trade, fentanyl controls, and Middle East conflicts.
As for how the interests of the US and China may eventually intersect, Lin said Taiwan should “remain concerned, but not overly worried.” He added that the foreign ministry will continue closely monitoring the negotiations and will not let its guard down.
Lin also emphasized that developments since Trump’s first term, including arms sales, defense cooperation, and broader deployments along the first island chain, have underscored Taiwan’s role as an indispensable US partner.
