TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Paraguayan President Santiago Pena on Sunday met with former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) during his final day in Taiwan.
Pena led a delegation on a state visit to Taiwan from May 7 to 10 and, after concluding the trip, departed for the Philippines, per CNA. In a post on X, Pena shared a photo with Tsai, describing her as a “great friend.”
Pena said the two discussed bilateral cooperation and reflected on the long-standing alliance between Paraguay and Taiwan. He added that the friendship between the two countries is built on concrete achievements, including joint projects and investments.
On Saturday, Pena visited Tainan alongside President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), CNA reported. Lin said the delegation toured the Southern Taiwan Science Park and the National Center for High-performance Computing to learn about Taiwan’s development in AI, computing, and technology governance.
The delegation had lunch at A Sha Restaurant, where the owner’s family served several classic Taiwanese dishes. Despite the busy Mother’s Day holiday period, the restaurant reserved an entire floor for the visiting delegation.
In the afternoon, the group visited the Chimei Museum, according to CNA. The delegation later stopped at the Chimei Happiness Factory to make pineapple cakes while wearing chef hats.
Lin said he was deeply impressed by Pena’s sincerity after accompanying him to multiple events over the past several days. Although Taiwan and Paraguay are geographically far apart, Lin said the two countries have grown closer through technology, food, and cultural exchanges.
