TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – New Taipei police warned Saturday that it will not allow a scooter protest on the opening day for Danjiang Bridge on Tuesday.
The caution follows complaints that the lanes for scooters on the new bridge between Tamsui and Bali in New Taipei are too narrow. The motorcycle lanes are at most 1.6 meters wide, while car lanes measure 2.5 m.
According to police sources, activists were planning to have scooters use the car lanes en masse on the opening day Tuesday, CNA reported. Road safety activists said the narrow scooter lanes would lead to more accidents. At the same time, rescue work would be difficult in the event of crashes or fires, they said.
New Taipei police said that after becoming aware of the activists’ plans for a protest, they were prepared to take all appropriate measures to keep scooters off the main lanes on Tuesday. Police said they had also communicated with the Transportation Ministry’s Highway Bureau about the measures needed to conduct rescue work in the event of accidents on the scooter lanes.
The Fire Department said firefighters have trained for the eventuality. Rescue vehicles would use car lanes, bicycle lanes, and the pedestrian sidewalks to assist, the department said.
