TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mainland Affairs Council condemned Beijing on Thursday after reports that a company in China dismissed a relative of a Taiwanese minister over alleged support for Taiwan independence.
MAC officials characterized the firing as a desperate move, according to Bloomberg. The council added that such political targeting negatively affects normal business operations and cross-strait relations.
MAC criticized the Chinese Communist Party for “repeatedly employing methods that lack any civilized bottom line, which severely damages the normal investment and operations of Taiwanese businesses and harms cross-strait relations.”
The rebuke follows China’s recent attempt to prevent President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) from attending an anniversary celebration in Eswatini. In response, Taiwan’s legislature formally condemned Beijing for pressuring third countries to revoke the presidential plane’s flight permits, per CNA.
MAC officials have repeatedly warned citizens to fully assess the necessity of traveling to China as Beijing expands its national security regulations to target its critics.
