TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung (吳志中) delivered a speech at the European Parliament on Wednesday that focused on China’s suppression of Taiwan.
Wu appeared at the urging of the parliament’s Security and Defense Committee, marking the first time a Taiwanese deputy foreign minister has formally addressed a parliamentary session. He said his appearance underscored Taiwan’s growing importance to Europe in an interview afterwards with CNA.
In his speech, Wu said China is attempting to redefine the international order, particularly concerning Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. As an example, Wu said when Taiwan seeks to participate in the World Health Organization, China demands prior consent, demonstrating Beijing’s influence over international institutions.
Wu said ships passing through the Taiwan Strait are frequently harassed by China, implying that vessels must first obtain Beijing’s permission to avoid interference.
He added that when President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) visits Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, China pressures nations to revoke previously approved overflight permits. Wu said such actions violate the international order based on freedom of navigation and aviation.
Wu also answered questions from members of parliament during the session. Some European lawmakers expressed concern about Taiwan’s arms purchases and self-defense capabilities. He said recent polls show more than 60% of Taiwanese support arms procurement measures, per CNA.
Wu said Taiwan and Europe share many common interests, adding that Taiwan’s stability, security, and democracy are directly tied to Europe’s interests.
“We need to let Europe know that we are a core interest of Europe, a core interest of Japan, and a core interest of the United States,” Wu said. He added that becoming a core interest to many nations would encourage them to defend Taiwan.
