TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Legislator Chen Pei-yu (陳培瑜) on Wednesday defended the government’s planned nationwide policy briefings, saying they are not campaign activities.
The DPP has organized a series of briefings led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君), beginning May 9 in Kaohsiung, per NOWNews. A party insider said the effort aims to address public concerns directly, including criticism over a perceived disconnect between stock market performance and public sentiment about the economy, per China Times.
The KMT accused the DPP of using appointed officials to campaign for the party, while the TPP said mobilizing officials in this way could deepen political divisions. In April, the KMT called for legislation requiring administrative neutrality among appointed officials and greater transparency in the use of government resources, per Tai Sounds.
Chen rejected the criticism, saying the ruling party has a responsibility to engage with people across the country and listen to public concerns. She added that the administration must explain its policy plans and gather feedback on its priorities.
The briefings come as opposition lawmakers move to impeach President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). A vote is scheduled for May 19, though the DPP has indicated it will boycott the proceedings, per Mirror Media.
