TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday he is certain a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will talk about Taiwan.
Trump is expected to visit Beijing from May 14-15, per CNA. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Rubio warned that no “destabilizing” actions should be taken toward Taiwan in the week leading up to the trip, per AFP.
“I am sure Taiwan will be a topic of conversation; it always is,” Rubio said, Reuters reported. He added that both countries understand that any instability in the region serves neither side’s interests.
“We do not need any destabilizing events to occur with regards to Taiwan or anywhere in the Indo-Pacific," said Rubio, according to Reuters.
China has continued to send military aircraft and naval vessels into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone on a near-daily basis this year. In April, a planned trip by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to Eswatini was delayed after three African countries denied overflight rights, allegedly under pressure from Beijing.
