TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The fourth annual Afrofest Taiwan will return on May 23 with its “Uhuru Edition,” celebrating African and Black culture under the theme of freedom.
Organizers said the festival invites people of all backgrounds to celebrate African diaspora culture through music, dance, food, fashion, and art. “Uhuru,” meaning freedom in Swahili, reflects the event’s focus on self-expression, community, and cultural exchange, per a press release.
“Africa Day is a joyful expression of unity, heritage, and community. It’s a celebration of culture, for everyone,” event co-organizers Toi Windham and Boney Kross said in a joint statement.
The festival will be held at POPOP Taipei in Taipei’s Nangang District from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring performances, workshops, and family-friendly activities.
Planned highlights include live music performances, DJ sets, traditional drumming, dance showcases, and interactive spaces for attendees. Cultural arts, fashion, and crafts will also be featured alongside food and drink vendors representing Afro-inspired cuisines.
Performers announced for the event include DJs Crash, Kwenzie, Amin, Del Vibe, and Kizzle, as well as acts such as Higher Rootz, Izy M, Daniel Black, and David White. Cultural groups, including Belizean culture ambassadors and a South African dance group, are also scheduled to appear, with additional performers to be announced, per the press release.
The event will also host vendors offering African and diaspora cuisine, including Jamaican, Nigerian, and Belizean dishes, as well as desserts and specialty drinks. Organizers said the festival will showcase Black-owned and diaspora businesses, along with art, fashion, and wellness activities.
Additional attractions include an Afro-style fashion competition, event merchandise, prize giveaways, and a “Fest Family Zone” with activities for children. Organizers said the event coincides with Africa Day celebrations and aims to promote cultural understanding and connection in Taiwan.
Ticket prices range from NT$200 (US$6) for early promotional sales to NT$500 at the door, with free entry for children under 10. Attendees are reminded that alcohol consumption is restricted to those 18 and older and that drinking and driving is prohibited.
Organizers said Afrofest Taiwan continues to grow each year, serving as a platform for cultural exchange and a celebration of diversity, creativity, and community. For more information, please visit the website.
