TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s defense ministry said it is exploring more effective ways to counter China’s cognitive warfare against Taiwan.
The ministry said it has established a big data public opinion system to provide timely responses to misinformation and other controversies, per CNA. Responses are coordinated with fact-checking centers and released as news updates.
The ministry is also promoting patriotic and national defense education. It has produced programs such as “Exposing the Red (CCP) Trap,” “Media Literacy,” and “Counter-Intelligence Education” to strengthen the ability of the public and military personnel to discern misinformation from real reports, according to CNA.
The ministry is also using military and civilian channels to publicize the results of major military exercises, showcase new weapons and equipment, and increase “military visibility” to garner support for defense investment and strengthen psychological resilience, CNA reported.
To combat Chinese infiltration, the ministry said it would continue expanding education to build counterintelligence literacy among military personnel. The ministry said it aims to reduce the risk of leaks of classified information and ensure national security.
In March, the Mainland Affairs Council said in a report that China has exploited Taiwan’s democratic and free environment to carry out division and infiltration. Methods include intelligence gathering, technology theft, and the establishment of spy networks to advance Beijing’s goal of invading Taiwan.
The MAC identified five major channels of infiltration: criminal gangs, underground moneylenders, shell companies, temple organizations, and civic groups.
