TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A delegation of lawmakers from Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party Youth Division will meet President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) during a visit to Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
During their May 2-6 stay, the 12 ruling party members will also meet Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍). They also plan visits to the Legislative Yuan, the National Security Council, and the Straits Exchange Foundation.
The delegation includes members of both houses of Japan’s Diet and hopes to discuss bilateral issues and the regional situation, the ministry said in a statement. Outside of Taipei, they will also travel to Taichung and to Chiayi City.
The ministry described the LDP Youth Division as a unit of Japan’s ruling party with a long history of promoting ties to Taiwan. The group often holds discussions with all sectors of society in Taiwan about recent regional developments.
Youth Division chair and delegation leader Hiranuma Shoujiro served as a state minister for reconstruction, while most Youth Division members were promising young politicians, the ministry said. Prime ministers including Aso Taro, Abe Shinzo, and Kishida Fumio had first served as leaders of the Youth Division.
