TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Taiwan’s northeast coast Friday at 8:39 p.m., the Central Weather Administration said.
The quake’s epicenter was located 38.7 kilometers northeast of Yilan County Hall under the ocean at a focal depth of 98.3 km.
Residents of northern parts of Taiwan received an alert message on their phone.
The intensity of the quake reached level 4 in Yilan County, and in parts of Hsinchu, Nantou, and Hualien. Level 3 was reported in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Chiayi, and Taitung.
Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
