TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipower on Thursday celebrated its 80th anniversary, highlighting its efforts to maintain Taiwan’s power system and expand renewable energy supply, CNA reported.
Taipower said that over the past 10 years, it has promoted clean energy, a stable power supply, and grid resilience programs in response to decarbonization trends. It added that electricity has become a key resource for national and industrial development.
AI and the semiconductor sector are driving up Taiwan’s electricity demand. In response, the company has submitted a plan to restart the Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant for review.
The firm has also continued to expand renewable energy development, including wind and solar power projects.
At a press conference, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) thanked Taipower staff for their efforts in maintaining and repairing the nation’s power infrastructure. He highlighted the company’s key role in supporting Taiwan’s industrial development.
During this year’s Lunar New Year holiday, about 4,000 company staff continued working to monitor power system operations, Lai added. The company also mobilized about 600 workers to carry out maintenance on generating units during the period.
In July 2025, Typhoon Danas caused nearly 3,500 power poles to collapse, the most severe damage on record. Lai thanked the company for mobilizing about 2,000 personnel to carry out repairs and help restore electricity to affected areas as quickly as possible.
Taipower Chair Tseng Wen-sheng (曾文生) said the company is increasing gas-fired power generation capacity to reduce reliance on coal-fired power. It is also developing geothermal energy in Yilan.
Tseng noted the company has strengthened the power system, cutting typhoon-related outages by nearly 60% and improving restoration speed.
He added that Taipower will continue grid resilience programs, which are expected to be completed by 2028. The programs will integrate energy storage and smart dispatch systems to enhance power stability.
More than 10,000 power lines nationwide have also been equipped with automation systems that can quickly detect faults when issues occur.
