TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The US House Appropriations Committee has approved a 2027 appropriations bill that includes assistance for Taiwan and an amendment prohibiting the funding of maps showing Taiwan as part of China.
The committee released the bill's text on April 22, and its Subcommittee on National Security, the State Department, and Related Programs reviewed it on April 23, passing it by a vote of 8-5. The measure was passed by the full committee on Tuesday with a vote of 35-27, per CNA.
According to the draft, of the funds appropriated under the Foreign Military Financing program, not less than NT$15.78 billion (US$500 million) is to assist Taiwan. The bill also includes Representative Tom Tiffany's "Honest Maps" amendment, which bars any of the act's funds from being used to “create, procure, or display” any map that portrays Taiwan as part of China.
In a Tuesday press release the committee said the appropriations bill totals NT$1.51 trillion, a decrease of NT$86.1 billion (about 6%) from last year. The committee stressed that despite the reduction, the bill continues to provide funding for allies.
The bill provides a payment of NT$1.14 billion to the American Institute in Taiwan. An additional NT$126 million is to be administered by AIT for the Global Cooperation and Training Framework. It also calls for funding for the Taiwan Fellowship Program to be made available to AIT.
