TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan has launched a cross-border mobile payment service allowing Japanese visitors to use Paypay in Taiwan, CNA reported Monday.
The Financial Information Service Co. said the new TWQR service links overseas payment platforms with Taiwan’s QR code system. Under the program, Japanese users can use Paypay to scan TWQR codes at more than 400,000 participating merchants nationwide.
Easycard Corporation said the initiative marks a step toward two-way cross-border digital payments. It aims to make spending easier for tourists visiting Taiwan for business or leisure.
Participating stores can be identified by TWQR or Easypay signage. Japanese visitors using Paypay may receive store-specific promotions, with details varying by location and campaign.
Officials said Paypay is Japan’s leading mobile payment platform, with more than 60% market share and over 73 million users. Taiwan plans to expand the TWQR system, with Singapore expected to join the rollout in the second quarter, per CTEE.
UDN reported that Taiwan recorded 8.57 million visitor arrivals in 2025, a 9% increase year on year. Officials said improving payment convenience and strengthening regional partnerships are expected to support further tourism growth.
