TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Acer Group founder Stan Shih (施振榮) reflected on the company’s recent 50th anniversary, saying its greatest contribution over the past five decades has been nurturing talent in Taiwan.
In a press release issued Monday through his foundation, Shih said Acer was established in 1976 with NT$1 million (US$32,000) by five entrepreneurs, aiming to seize opportunities created by the emerging microprocessor revolution, per UDN.
Despite limited resources and an immature market at the time, Shih said the founders were determined to act because Taiwan urgently needed a breakthrough to strengthen its international competitiveness. Acer therefore adopted a long-term strategy focused on research and development combined with brand marketing.
Shih said the company initially viewed itself as a “gardener,” providing a platform for young people to develop and showcase their talents. He noted that traditional cultural constraints can sometimes limit opportunities for youth. He said Acer has worked since its founding to break such bottlenecks and foster an environment conducive to the growth of the high-tech industry.
He said the company has also promoted talent development by organizing essay competitions and digital innovation events, offering platforms for high school and university students to demonstrate creativity and entrepreneurship, according to his foundation’s press release.

The Acer Group, which includes companies such as Acer Inc., AU Optronics, Qisda Corporation, and Wistron, has grown into a conglomerate with 43 listed firms, per UDN.
Shih said Acer’s value lies not in short-term profitability but in the intangible impact of the talent it has cultivated. While the company may not always rank among the most profitable, he said its role in fostering confidence and opportunity for younger generations remains its most important achievement.
Looking ahead, Shih said Acer will continue to provide a platform for youth development, aiming to contribute further to Taiwan and the global community.
