TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) confirmed on Monday that she will visit the US in June for 10 days.
Cheng said she plans to arrange meetings with senior officials in Washington, DC, to explain what was discussed during her meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and exchange views on issues of mutual concern, CNA reported. Asked about a possible meeting with US State Department officials, she said arrangements are being made.
She previously said some senior US lawmakers had already expressed interest in meeting her and encouraged her to visit. Cheng also said she hopes to meet overseas Taiwanese communities during the trip.
Cheng said she had not originally planned to go to Boston, but adjusted her itinerary after receiving invitations from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She added that she remained optimistic about the trip and hoped it would exceed expectations.
American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene visited Cheng at the KMT’s headquarters on Wednesday. AIT said in a Facebook post that both sides agreed differences between Taiwan and China should be “resolved by peaceful means, free from coercion,” in a way acceptable to both peoples.
