TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The final batch of M1A2T Abrams tanks purchased from the US arrived at the Port of Taipei on Sunday evening.
At 12:10 a.m., more than a dozen civilian trailers were seen leaving the port carrying M1A2T tanks covered in tarps, per CNA. The convoy traveled on the West Coast Expressway to the Armor Training Command in Hsinchu County’s Hukou Township, with police managing traffic and military police providing escorts.
The Army operates about 1,000 tanks, including the CM-11 Brave Tiger and M60A3 Patton, many of which have been in service for more than 20 years. In addition to upgrading M60A3 tanks with new engines, the Army has allocated NT$40.52 billion (US$1.28 billion) in a special budget from 2019 to 2027 to procure 108 M1A2T tanks for deployment with the 6th Army Corps Command in northern Taiwan.
The first batch of 38 M1A2T tanks arrived in December 2024. The second batch of 42 arrived on July 28, 2025, and both batches have since been put into service.
The last batch of 28 was completed in the US in late February and early March before being shipped to Taiwan by sea, CNA reported. Following joint inspection and handover by Taiwan and the US, and subsequent training, including conversion training, combat readiness exercises, and evaluations, the tanks will be fully operational.
In addition to the tanks, Taiwan has also procured 14 M88A2 recovery vehicles, 16 M1070A1 heavy equipment transporters, and 16 M1000 semi-trailers.
